What are the best ways to find BEST hotel deals? Since technology is constantly changing, so are the best search methods. Here are the top seven ways we like for finding good hotel deals.
Check the best hotel search sites
First, it’s best to search the sites that consistently find either the most hotel choices or find the best hotel prices. So what are those sites? According to Frommer’s travel guide expert, Reid Bramblett, these six top the list:
Booking.com, Priceline, Hotels.com, Expedia, Travelocity, and Trivago.
Call the hotel directly
Searching hotel deals online is always a good practice but after comparison shopping and short-listing your top choice, it can be worthwhile to contact or book through the hotel directly. Take a look at many of the booking pages of hotel sites to find the Best Guarantee Rate.
For instance, Marriott has a page: “When you book direct on Marriott”. On that page in tiny text is a ‘See Details’ link. Click that and you go to a page “It Pays to Book Direct”. On that page they list their Best Rate Guarantee that reads “Find a better rate? We’ll Match +25% off.” It takes careful searching to find the links, but if you’re staying multiple nights, those savings could be worth your extra time!
Another reason to contact the hotel? When you reserve through an aggregator like Kayak or Trivago your room selection is not always guaranteed. Read the fine print and if your booking reads, “your room request has been passed to the property but is not guaranteed” you’ll want to call the hotel to be certain they will honor the aggregator’s quoted rate and guarantee your room type if you switch the booking directly to them.
Join the loyalty reward program
As well as checking with the hotel directly, be sure to join their loyalty rewards program – even if it’s your first stay. With reward programs, you’re treated almost like an ‘insider’ and can score access to the club floor (where you can receive perks like free breakfast, free appetizers and sometimes free pre-dinner drinks) or often free WIFI or free parking. All this just for being a member of their rewards program. Joining these programs is typically free and unlike the early reward days, most hotels can access your reward number through your phone number or other personal information. No need to carry a physical card anymore.
Sign up for price or sale alerts
If you have a favorite hotel, join their mailing list and social media pages to receive news on discounts, sales or special upgrades. Also sign up for alerts on aggregator and online travel agent sites like Hotels.com or Kayak.
Stay at newly opened hotels
Newly opened hotels want new guests and want them fast. They often offer discounts for guests who stay there during the first 6 months or even the first year. Here’s a list of the Most Anticipated Hotel Openings of 2017 and an EU list for 2018.
Search for hotel coupons
Before booking, be sure to search for hotel discount coupons. A couple of options include Coupons.com or the Chrome extension called Honey. And of course, AAA is still a great discount option and is accepted at over 100,000 partner locations U.S.-wide. AAA advertises ‘best available rate’ to their members staying at Best Western®, Hilton Worldwide®, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts®, Marriott® Hotels & Resorts and Starwood Hotels & Resorts.
